The Norseman Gallery is only a mile or so from the recreated Viking Village, which is a World Heritage site. It makes as good end to a splendid day. The place is decorated with really interesting aboriginal art-take a particularly close look at the caribou-hair pictures. Gina Hodge runs the Norseman as if it is her own."We use only the fresest fish and vegetables, fresh cream and extra virgin olive oil"- and she apologizes for having to charge 20.00 for a three course meal! Travellers coming up the shore will tell you that their meal they had the Norseman was the best they had had in a month. She gets her squid(served with tomatoes and garlic) at nearby St. Anthony, the next year she expects to have squid as well, which will be served with garlic, cracked peppercorns and ginger. She also serves good brushetta and a notable fish chower, made with cod and salmon. In June and early July, you can choose you lobster from a salt-water crate at the door. Scallops are simmered in white winethickened with cream, serving the dish with chives and delicate sticks of carrot and rutabaga. They make their own bread rolls, and this summer their making their own French bread too. Be sure to try bake-apple or partride-berry cheesecake before you leave. This summer marks the fifieth anniversary of Newfoundland's Union with Canada, and at the Norseman they plan to have a special dinner theatre every Tuesday and Friday.
