"Tales of L’Anse aux Meadows"

Sieur de Roberval

Prior to the year 1000, the Dorset Eskimo and the Beothuk Indians inhabited L’Anse aux Meadows. Then around 1000 A.D. the Norse established a settlement here. Many French migratory fishermen and possibly Basque whalers visited the area in the 1500’s to late 1800's. Finally in 1835 William Decker founded the present day community of L’Anse aux Meadows.

Cultures of the Land and Sea, gatherers of seasonal riches nature and history have provided. We will illustrate how our land and sea cultures are personified, and how distinct tastes and traditions have developed. Through artistic heritage, of gathering foods from across the barrens and hills, and from bays and harbours combining them into a blend of tradition and innovation which have helped to shape these unique cultures.

Please sit, relax and enjoy the evidence of the cultural product that has been molded by Newfoundland’s own earth and waters.

Every Tuesday and Friday at 7:30p.m. night beginning June 25th until end of August 2004, we will be hosting a "Newfoundland Times" with story telling, square dancing, skits, drama, traditional music, sing-along and food.
